Chapter 5: Herbology Special Guest.
Rose woke up really early that next morning. Actually, she felt that she didn’t even sleep. Her hand was hurting. She looked fown and saw that she was still clutching the necklace. She let it go but didn’t wear it off. She stood up quickly, slipped into her school robes, grabbed her bags and went down for breakfast.
It seemed like she wasn’t the only student who wanted an early breakfast. Lorcan Scamander was sitting on the Gryffindor table, not touching his plate. There were also a couple of Slytherin girls, but they were too busy gossiping to notice Rose sitting beside him on the Gryffindor table. The headmistress was already eating but she aid nothing about the Ravenclaw girl sitting with the Gryffindor boy.
“Hey Lorcan!” said Rose smiling.
He looked up startled and smiled at her.
“Hi Rose. How are you?”
“Fine,” she lied. “Hey, why aren’t you with Lysander? You’re usually with him all the time.”
“He hasn’t woken up yet, I guess..” said Lorcan, eating again.
Rose nodded, not wanting to ask him what the real reason was, because it was too personal.
“Well, see you later, then.” She said, standing up, as Abigail and Albus entered the Great Hall.
“Bye..” he said rather gloomily.
She walked towards Abigail who was already helping herself with food. Until now, did Rose realize how hungry she was. Albus was bidding her goodbye when she spotted Rose and smiled.
“What were you talking about with Lorcan?” asked Albus.
“Oh, just saying hi.” She answered, grabbing her bowl of porridge.
Abigail looked at Rose questioningly, the latter shook her head.
Rose had told Abigail everything about Scorpius after she returned to the common room last night. They had agreed not to tell Albus. They didn’t like to think how Albus would react if he found out that Rose and Scorpius had met up again. With a final wave Albus left to the Slytherin table.
They spent the rest of the breakfast in silence as the crowd of students entered the Hall, Rose half-wishing Scorpius would be among them. She couldn’t talk with him with Albus there, obviously, but she just wanted to look at him. But he wasn’t there.
“Probably wasn’t hungry,” said Abigail reassuringly.
“Yeah, maybe..” said Rose sulkily. “I think we’ll better go to today’s lessons, Abby. What do we have first?”
“History of Magic.” They both groaned.
The rest of the lessons went pretty uneventful. Rose glanced at Scorpius twice every class, but he would refuse to look at her. Albus actually glanced at them suspiciously a couple of times but Abigail would cover up for her. It was their last two lessons that were REALLY eventful.
“What do we have now?” asked Rose, as they exited the Transfiguration classroom.
Abigail rolled her eyes.
“Seriously, you need to memorize the schedule. I don’t understand how can you have the top marks of the year and don’t remember to what class we go next!” she said impatiently.
Rose laughed.
“C’mon, tell me!”
Abigail rolled her eyes again and laughing, pulled a piece of paper from her bag and checked.
“Oh…” she said, her face falling.
“What?” asked Rose.
“We have Herbology next…”
Rose’s face fell too. That means they were about to see Professor Longbottom, mere weeks after his wife’s death. She felt nervous. Surely, her parents would expect her to go and comfort him but she wasn’t the best comforter of the world. Actually, she was the worst. Rose sighed and said:
“Well, let’s go, then..”
So Rose and Abigail walked slowly down to the greenhouses. When they entered, almost all their classmates were there, but Professor Longbottom was missing.
“Where is he?” Abigail whispered.
“No idea..” said Rose.
They sat down beside Albus and Lysander.
“Hey girls..” they said.
“Hi…” said both the girls.
“Do you know where Professor Longbottom is?” Rose asked.
“I was going to ask you the same thing, Rosie..” said Albus.
Suddenly the whole room felt quiet. Neville Longbottom entered. He had shadows below his eyes and looked really tired. Nevertheless he gave the class a huge smile and said: “A-Alright, how were your holidays, kids?”
There was a loud mumble as students said: “Fine.” It seemed that the news of Hannah’s murders ran fast.
“Okay, today’s lesson we’ll see………”
The lesson went awkwardly long. Neville would sometimes stop talking abruptly and just stare at the window until a tentative student would have to bring him back to reality. Finally the bell rang and people started pouring out of the class, when professor Longbottom called out: “Weasley? Can I talk with you for a second?”
Rose turned around and nodded. Abigail said:
“Wait for you at dinner..”
“Okay.” Rose replied.
The remaining students left only leaving Rose and Neville alone.
“Hey, Rosie, um, I don’t know if you know about what happened on New Year’s Eve..” he started awkwardly.
“Um, sir, I think all the school knows by now..” she replied.
“Yes, yes, right. Um, well, I wanted to tell you that whatever happens to feel guilty alright? And if you can tell your parents this too. I know them since we were 11 years old and I know they’re dying of guilt right now. What happened to H-Hannah was just bad luck. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time..”
Rose felt that that wasn’t true. But she remained silent for her professor’s sake.
“You understand me?”
Rose nodded.
“Also, take care, Rosie. After this I realized that there are still very dark wizards out there. Promise you’ll take care of yourself..”
Rose was a little taken aback but she nodded.
“Alright, you may go now..” he said, smiling and hugging her.
Rose walked towards her stool and grabbed her bag, she was about to exit when there was a knock on the door.
“Come in..” said Neville loudly.
The door opened and Rose gasped. A tall, blonde woman smiled tenderly at her and hugged her. She ran at Neville and hugged him too.Neville laughed as he started chatting with her, totally forgetting that Rose was still there. The lady glanced at her and smiled and whispered: “Bye Rosie.” Rose just waved and walked outside immediately. She felt that strange joy on her that that lady always placed on her when she saw her. Luna Scamander.
Or, as you may know her best, Luna Lovegood.
